Christopher Kitalong, PhD

Dr. Christopher U. Kitalong is an accomplished researcher, educator, and community leader dedicated to advancing sustainable development and health in the Pacific region. Born to Ann and Clarence Kitalong, he has deep roots in Palau and a lifelong commitment to environmental and community-based initiatives.

Dr. Kitalong earned his B.S. in Science-Business from the University of Notre Dame in 2002, followed by an M.S. in Pharmacology from Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University in 2007. He completed his Ph.D. in Biology with a focus on Plant Sciences at The Graduate Center, City University of New York, in 2014.

His career spans numerous impactful roles, including serving as Vice President of Cooperative Research and Extension at Palau Community College (PCC), Secretary/Treasurer and co-founder of the Pacific Academic Institution for Research, adjunct faculty at PCC, courtesy faculty at Oregon State University, and Research Affiliate at the University of Guam. Dr. Kitalong also chairs the Palau National Scholarship Board and leads the Palau Boxing Federation as its president.

Dr. Kitalong's research integrates traditional medicine, ethnobotany, and modern pharmacology to address non-communicable diseases and food security challenges in the Pacific. His work on bioassay-guided fractionation of Palauan medicinal plants and interventions for diabetes and obesity showcases his commitment to blending cultural traditions with scientific innovation. He has collaborated on critical projects addressing agricultural resilience, invasive species management, and sustainable health care systems.

An active author and peer reviewer, Dr. Kitalong has contributed to prominent journals like the Journal of Ethnopharmacology and Nature and co-authored the Palau Primary Health Care Manual. His leadership fosters capacity building and education, inspiring a new generation of scientists and advocates in underdeveloped regions.

When not engaged in his professional pursuits, Dr. Kitalong actively contributes to the conservation and well-being of Palau's communities, leveraging his expertise to promote sustainable practices and cultural preservation.
